County of Simcoe, Wasaga Beach to honour lifesavers

Midhurst/ May 18, 2012 – A 53-year-old man is alive today because of the quick actions of five Wasaga Distribution workers and the presence of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) in their vehicle.

On May 22, the County of Simcoe, the Town of Wasaga Beach, and Wasaga Beach Fire Department will honour Bryan Cunliffe, Shawn Maltas, John McKnight, Frank Van Laarhoven, and Myles Southorn for going above and beyond the call of duty to save that man’s life. Read the rest of this entry »

YMCA Muskoka Forms New Partnership

The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka has partnered with the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board to provide an opportunity for youth registered in camp leadership development programs to obtain an Ontario Secondary School credit this summer. An Ontario certified teacher, along with YMCA camp staff, will deliver the program and evaluate the participants’ standing as it relates to the available credit. 3rd Annual Barrie Youth Race

(Toronto, ON – May 14, 2012) The 3rd Annual Barrie Youth Cup will be hosted by the Barrie Cycling Club on Saturday, May 19th (9:30am-1pm); and is the first race of the Ontario Cycling Association’s (OCA) “Ontario Youth Cup Road Series”. The Youth Series is specifically designed for kids aged 9-16 to experience the fun and excitement of road cycling within a safe and friendly environment. The stage race includes a road race and time trial with the combined points total determining the placing of a rider for a general classification result. May 14, 2012 – (Toronto) – A new survey reveals the extent to which Ontarians are conflicted about how to act in situations of potential sexual assault or harassment. While respondents were clear about how to act in cases where the threat or concern of sexual violence was obvious, the results show an overwhelming tendency to not get involved in situations that are complicated. Matthews House Hospice # 1 in Canada for Hike Fundraising

MP Dr. Kellie Leitch joined in the fun this past Sunday at Spring Creek Park for the Annual Hike for Hospice. Over 150 Hikers filled the park and enjoyed a wonderful time. Face Painting, Smoothie the Clown, button making and a delicious BBQ welcomed the hikers to an enjoyable afternoon walk in the Park. “This was the “Best Ever” and our Hospice Team was # 1 across Canada”, said Kathy Black board treasurer. The event raised over $50,000 from team and individual pledges. Board President, Marv Chantler, said “ I would like to thank all our volunteers, staff and the very kind and generous community participants who helped us exceed our goal. To all the people who hiked and supported our hikers my sincere appreciation”. Mayor MacEachern and Deputy Mayor Rick Milne were on hand to present a Proclamation to acknowledge National Hospice Palliative Care Week. The one week campaign creates awareness about the benefits of hospice palliative care here in our community and across Canada.

Seeds of Destruction Being Spread Through the County Forest

Legislation being considered to control spread and sale of invasive species

When people dump garbage in the forest, it’s a nuisance. When they dump leaf and yard waste in the forest, they may be sowing the seeds of destruction.

People imagine that their yard waste is organic and can’t do any harm, Simcoe County Forester Graeme Davis told a meeting on invasive alien plant species last week. But the seeds of invasive garden plants are introduced through the waste and then spread through the forest, displacing native wildflowers like trilliums and killing soil organisms that native trees need to germinate. “It’s more problematic than garbage, that we can pick up and remove,” Davis said, adding that in almost every case where an invasive species is found in the forest, county employees have been able to trace it back to illegally dumped yard waste.
